I travelled up the east coast to Hokkaido and am in complete shock at the scale of damage caused by the force of the tsunami. I watched some footage this morning which was running on BBC from local Japanese news channels which showed thousands of homes disappearing below the tsunami as if they were paper toys. I cried my eyes out.

All my friends are ok in Tokyo though worried about rising radiation levels. Some have made the very difficult decision to leave as they are worried about radiation, and don't honestly believe all the conflicting reports but feel its not worth the risk with young children. My cousin and his family are fine in Sapporo, though undecided what to do. The British Foreign Office website this evening have followed France and Austria and are advising any British Nationals to leave Tokyo, which isn't a good sign. France sent 2 Air France planes today to evacuate French citizens from Tokyo. Its really very worrying for all the people who can't leave. Have you heard any more updates from Matthew?

I've been in email contact with a few Japanese friends who're in Tokyo and they are very scared and frightened, and still in shock. They've had +6 aftershocks everyday since Friday which are pretty big. They've said most supermarkets are closed, and the ones which are open have no food, along with rolling powercuts everyday and night.

I'm frustrated that the UK media are not broadcasting telephone numbers for donating money, like they did with the Thailand Tsunami appeal. There seems to be 24/7 footage and updates, but no urgency to broadcast donation phone numbers. I can't believe it. How did your Radio interviews go? I only found out the following day so missed them. Have you thought of somehow organising a fundraising evening in the Midlands or even London(which has a huge Japanese population) and getting everyone involved who has links with Japan or simply wants to help....maybe people are doing this already in London? If there's anything I can do to help or somehow get involved, let me know.
